21st Century Education is the emerging model for realigning traditional classrooms into ones that accommodate different modalities of learning, such as virtual learning, one-on-one learning, and/or collaborative learning.

The Kingsolver-Pierce Elementary School at Fort Knox is one of DoDEA’s first 21st century schools. AES is installing the building systems, renewable energy technologies, and sustainable features of the building so that they serve as a hands-on learning tool for the school’s 635 students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.

The 115,000-square-foot school will utilize a geothermal heat pump system, solar water heaters, clerestory windows, and solar tubes, as well as photovoltaic powered parking lot lights. These renewable sources coupled with energy efficient systems yield a net-zero energy “achievable” design. Additionally, the school’s design includes classrooms extending into outdoor space, energy dash boards, and a green roof. With all of the sustainable elements, the facility is on track to earn LEED for Schools Silver certification.
